.... This Winter

Get ready for winter - Keeping well this winter

  • Keep moving - Try not to sit still for more than an hour at a time. Even a little bit of activity now and then can help you maintain strength and mobility.
  • Eat well - It can sometimes be difficult to keep up the motivation to prepare meals. But it’s good to try and keep to a routine where you can.
  • Get your winter vaccinations – even if you’re fighting fit. Respiratory viruses are more widespread in winter, so it’s especially important to get your vaccinations. Vaccinations are particularly important this winter as flu and coronavirus levels are expected to rise due to an increase in social contact.
  • Make sure your home is warm enough - Try to heat your home to a steady and comfortable temperature throughout the day in the rooms you use most, such as the living room and bedroom. If there are rooms you don’t use, like a spare bedroom, turn off the radiators here and close the doors.
  • Stop the spread of germs - Regularly washing your hands with soap and water is one of the best ways to stop germs from spreading. It’s a good idea to keep some antibacterial gel with you when you’re out and about, too.
  • Wrap up well and stay stocked up - Wearing plenty of layers is the best way to keep warm in winter. If you’re heading out, make sure you take some extra layers – even if you don’t need them immediately. It’s a good idea to stock up on cold and sore throat remedies, too.

Looking forward….. to Autumn TV

A guide to what’s on the Box. Here are some TV ideas to look out for.

Call the Midwife Christmas Special – BBC1

Cosier than a mug of mulled wine by the fire, the BBC’s much-loved period drama Call the Midwife returns with more of the usual snow and sadness.

A Spy Among Friends – ITV

A Spy Among Friends offers a fresh perspective on the true story of double agent Kim Philby and his friend and fellow spy Nicholas Elliott.

Riches – ITV

Based around a warring family fighting over a business empire after the sudden death of mogul Stephen Richards (Hugh Quarshie), the series should deliver high-stakes thrills.

The Garden - Jobs for Autumn

  • In winter it really helps our garden bird population if we take our feathered friends under our wing and give them a little bit of extra support. Harsh weather conditions, dwindling habitats and accelerated feeding rates can all combine to force more birds into our gardens in search of food at this time of year.
  • To get the most variety in your garden and to spread the love evenly try to provide a range of seeds, fats, nuts and grains, as well as mealworms, which are highly nutritious. Birds will welcome your left overs too – rice, pasta, unsalted meat fat, biscuit crumbs, dried fruit and pieces of cheese all go down a treat. Windfall apples or fruit that is past its best in the fruit bowl can also be chopped up and thrown on the lawn for ground-feeding birds, such as blackbirds.
If you need your garden tidied up ready for the autumn give the office a call - we can help

Buying online

Everyone is having to embrace the online world - some kicking and screaming! But at Christmas many make their puchases online. We’ve been looking into ways you can make online shopping safe. Shopping online can be a great way to save you time and money. But some deals and websites are used to hide scams.
  • The safest way to buy online is with your bank or credit card. Your card will help to protect your money should anything go wrong. Fraudsters often want you to pay directly to a bank account or by wire transfer. But it’s like handing over cash and is hard to trace. If you pay one of these ways and it turns out to be a scam, it’s very hard to get your money back.
  • Before you fill in personal or banking details on a site, look for the closed padlock image. You can find it in the browser bar. It means the link to the site is secure. But please note, these do not mean a site is genuine.
Buyer Beware
  • Read all the details - Before you buy, read all the details about an item. Does it match what it says in the title and picture?
  • Be careful of free trials - If you agree to a free trial, check to make sure that you don’t have to pay for it later on. Look for the terms that may be hidden in the small print.
  • Check the small print - Terms and conditions can be found in the small print. They should tell you about any hidden costs, as well as delivery and returns information.
  • Know where you’re buying from - Check the location of a seller, especially if they’re not well-known. It’s easier to complain and get your money back from sellers that are based in the UK and EU.
  • Search for FAQs - Most online shops have a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page. This can help you quickly find key information.
  • Keep track of what you buy - Check your bank account often to make sure you know what all your payments are for.

The danger of Scams

We frequently hear of scam attempts from our clients
  • Never disclose security details, such as your PIN or full banking password
  • Don’t assume an email, text or phone call is authentic. Call the business’s official number to check
  • Don’t be rushed - a genuine organisation won’t mind waiting
  • Listen to your instincts - you know if something doesn’t feel right
  • Stay in control - don’t panic and make a decision you’ll regret
  • If it is genuine, they will ring back.
