If exercise were a pill

  • May 26, 2017

"If exercise were a pill it would be the most cost effective drug ever invented”. Just imagine how many medicines would be taken off the market because all we needed was a single subscription to “exercise”? The time, effort and money we’d all save not to mention the many health benefits felt just by popping a single pill? No sweat necessary.

Many of us already know that participating in pulse raising activities can vastly improve numerous areas of our lives but not enough of us take such an *ahem* active approach in being more mobile.

Studies have shown that exercise can reduce the risk of certain cancers, heart diseases, strokes and type two diabetes. Depression and dementia has also been linked to fitness levels so until scientists find a way to encapsulate exercise, we’re all going to have to get up from that chair, lace up those trainers and get out for some fresh air.

Plus, exercise only gets more important with age. According to NHS statistics, 90% of over 75’s do not do the recommended 150 minutes of exercise a week. While there may be a number of reasons behind this, the fact remains, old age is not an excuse for a declined level of fitness and if anything is far more important the older we get; it can be the key to living longer and maintaining independence.

So to continue enjoying life’s little pleasures, such as going out to meet friends or playing with grandchildren without the aches and pains you may associate with running around, an active approach to life is strongly recommended. From simply walking to and from your local afternoon coffee catch-up to taking a dance class once a week, your options are limitless as many gyms and sports clubs also tailor classes specifically for elderly participants.
